Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults—and one of the biggest threats to living independently. Here’s the encouraging part: most falls are preventable. A few practical changes can dramatically lower the risk for you or someone you love.
Make Your Home Work for You
Most falls happen at home, in familiar places. Walk through your house with fresh eyes:
- Remove loose throw rugs, or secure them with non-slip backing
- Keep walkways clear of cords, clutter, and pet toys
- Add night lights in hallways, bedrooms, and bathrooms
- Install grab bars in the shower and near the toilet
- Keep everyday items within easy reach—no chairs as step stools
- Make sure stairways are well lit with sturdy handrails on both sides
Build Strength and Balance
Muscle strength and balance naturally decline with age—unless we work at them. Regular walking, gentle strength exercises, and balance-focused activities like tai chi have all been shown to reduce falls. Even standing on one foot while holding the counter, a little each day, helps.
Review Medications and Vision
Some medications—and some combinations of medications—cause dizziness or drowsiness that leads to falls. Bring a list of everything you take, including over-the-counter products, to your next wellness visit so your healthcare provider can review it.
Vision matters too. Have your eyes checked regularly, and be careful on stairs with bifocals, which can distort depth.
If You’ve Fallen Before, Say So
One fall doubles the chance of another—but many people never mention falls to their provider out of embarrassment or fear of losing independence. Please tell us. A fall is a medical clue, and addressing the cause is how independence is protected, not lost.
Bottom Line
Fall prevention isn’t about limiting your life—it’s about keeping it. A safer home, stronger legs, reviewed medications, and honest conversations go a long way.
